Dear Reader

Crazy Sultanand Bells

All bells tell a story, but on Good Friday many stay silent. The tale they would have to impart is one of abysmal dispair. It is only three days later that they jubilate. On Easter Sunday Christianity celebrates the resurrection of Christ, the churches burst with people, everybody joins in the great merriment. Spring is here, daffodils bloom, spirits rise, the markets rise, the pandemic will subside, Faust meets Gretchen, and the parks abound with happy children who chase the chocolate bunnies that have come out of their burrows.

No bells for Ibn Battuta, the Moroccan explorer born in 1304. Henearly jumped out of his skin, when he was first assaulted with those clangs. In the course of his travels, he experienced many more strange moments. When he was in Delhi, the Crazy Sultan offered him the position of Judge, since he was a wise man. Ibn Battuta protested that he was not knowledgeable enough for the job. «In this case», replied the Sultan, «I double your salary».

My father wondered, if this policy of scaling renumerations was still followed nowadays, but I told him: »Of course not! When incompetence is rewarded with big money, it is by coincidence only, never by plan». I then gave him a chocolate bunny. That made it easier to convince him.

We wish you a happy Easter time
