Swiss Venture Insights Report 2021 – Q2

For the second quarter of 2021, Swiss startups raised CHF 1404 million, up 118% versus the same period last year. Undoubtedly, the CHF 588 million mega-round of wefox contributed strongly to this result, but we are in record-breaking territory even without that round. The same goes for the total number of rounds, which increased by 13% compared to Q2 of last year. All in all, it very much looks like an incredible quarter for the Swiss VC ecosystem.

Run auf Neon-Aktien 

Heute Morgen um sieben Uhr (28.06.2021) startete die Challenger Bank neon den Verkauf von tokenisierten, stimmrechtslosen Aktien für Kunden und Kundinnen. Bereits nach kurzer Zeit waren alle Partizipationsscheine gezeichnet. Neon nimmt damit weitere 5 Millionen Franken ein. 

 
 

Gründungsboom in der Schweiz

Nachdem das Jahr 2020 trotz Corona als Rekordjahr in die Geschichte einging, steuert die Schweiz im laufenden Jahr auf einen neuen Rekord zu. Im ersten Halbjahr 2021 wurden in der Schweiz 26'387 neue Firmen gegründet. Dies entspricht einem Plus von beachtlichen +20.9% im Vergleich zum Vorhalbjahr.

HBM portfolio company Ambrx Biopharma raises USD 126 million in initial public offering on New York Stock Exchange

Ambrx Biopharma (NYSE: AMAM), a private company in the portfolio of HBM Healthcare Investments, completed its initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange last Friday. The company raised USD 126 million in new capital through the issuance of 7 million American Depository Shares (ADS) at a price of USD 18.00 per ADS. On the first trading day, the shares closed slightly lower at USD 17.05 (-5.3%).

2020 Central and Eastern Europe Private Equity Statistics

The comprehensive annual analysis of private equity activity across the CEE region, conducted in partnership with the Invest Europe CEE Task Force and sponsors Gide Loyrette Nouel.

Private equity in CEE was not immune to the effects of COVID-19, as the fundraising and investment data show. And like many regions, there are cyclical effects as large buyouts involving sizeable equity cheques, and large fundraisings do not happen every year – 2020 was such a year. However, the statistics also show CEE’s irrepressible strength, positioning the industry, and the companies that it backs, well for the future.

We are happy to announce the extension of the Series B financing at Alentis Therapeutics AG, Switzerland.  Alentis has extended its previously announced Series B round to USD 67mn (CHF 60mn). Morningside Venture Investments led the financing, joined by Jeito Capital as a new investor. Pureos and all co-investors participated in the Series B.

 
 

SMC Corporate Finance advises INTERSPORT in the sale of The Athlete's Foot

Global performance sports retailer INTERSPORT International Corporation (IIC) strengthens its core business and have agreed on a deal to sell 100% of the highly successful The Athlete´s Foot (TAF) retail and ecommerce network to Arklyz Group AG (Arklyz) – owner of Intersocks. As part of the deal, IIC and Arklyz have agreed on a close cooperation which will bring synergies and a beneficial development for all parties involved.

 
 

CastlePE: NAV far above the share price - record discount

CastlePE's NAV increased by 1.7 per cent during April (and probably even more in May). The positive monthly investment result was mainly driven by exits and valuation increases throughout the portfolio, namely the write-up in the valuation of Index Ventures III and Summit Partners Europe Private Equity Fund, L.P. The positive investment performance was further supported by the 2.4 per cent increase in the value of the Euro versus the Dollar during the month resulting in an unrealised currency gain of USD 8 million. Overall, a total of 5.56% of the current share capital and voting rights were bought back.

 
 

FenX closes CHF 2.7 Million Seed Financing Round backed by a group of experienced industrial and financial investors

FenX AG, a developer of mineral foams for building insulation, announced the closing of a CHF 2.7 Million seed financing round backed among others by TRfinanz Holding AG, Zürcher Kantonalbank, CADFEM International AG, Swiss Prime Site AG, the ETH Zurich Foundation, ValueBridge GmbH and CIMA Corporate Investment Management Affentranger Holding SA. FenX has developed a patented technology that uses mineral waste and low-value inorganic particles to produce a cost-effective solution for a sustainable, safe and efficient thermal insulation of buildings. The investment proceeds will be used to continue the R&D efforts, for the setup of the first production facility and for the preparation of the market entry. The round also includes the funds obtained from the Klimastiftung Schweiz and the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation Horizon 2020.

Private equity invests in record 566 CEE companies in 2020

Invest Europe, the association representing Europe’s private equity, venture capital and infrastructure sectors, as well as their investors, today released its 2020 Central and Eastern Europe Private Equity Statistics. The report shows that the number of companies receiving private equity investment increased by 15% on the previous year’s record and beat the five-year average by 46%.

 
 

Second KKR European real estate fund closes at USD 2.2bn

KKR has raised USD 2.2bn for its second value-add and opportunistic European real estate fund. The amount raised for the KKR Real Estate Partners Europe II (REPE II) fund exceeded the USD 739m raised in June 2016 for the manager’s first dedicated European real estate fund.

IPO-Newsletter Q2 2021

Die verbesserte konjunkturelle Lage liess die Aktienindizes in Europa und Nordamerika ansteigen. In diesem günstigen Marktumfeld konnten gemäss Dr. Andreas Neumann, Leiter Equity Capital Markets bei der Zürcher Kantonalbank, auch im Q2 2021 wieder eine grosse Anzahl Börsengänge erfolgreich durchgeführt werden. In Europa betrug das Emissionsvolumen im abgelaufenen Quartal bei über 175 Transaktionen rund EUR 22 Mrd. und auch in Nordamerika blieb die IPO-Aktivität mit über 180 Börsengängen und einem Gesamtvolumen von EUR 50 Mrd. hoch.

In der Schweiz fanden nach fünf Quartalen ohne IPO mit PolyPeptide Group, Montana Aerospace und Kursaal Bern gleich drei Unternehmen den Weg an die Börse und Marktgerüchten zufolge dürften im zweiten Halbjahr weitere Schweizer Börsengänge folgen. Successful IPO for HBM portfolio company Monte Rosa Therapeutics

Monte Rosa Therapeutics (Nasdaq: GLUE), a private company in the portfolio of HBM Healthcare Investments, reached an important milestone in the company's development with the successful IPO on Nasdaq. By issuing 11.7 million shares at a price of USD 19.00 each, the company raised USD 222 million in new capital. On yesterday's first trading day, the share price rose to USD 21.18 (+11.5%).

The 100 biggest companies in the world were worth a record-breaking $31.7 trillion as of March 31 2021, up 48% year-over-year. AEVIS VICTORIA SA sold a 10% minority share of Swiss Medical Network, the second-largest private group of hospitals in Switzerland, to Medical Properties Trust, Inc. The transaction marks an important milestone in AEVIS’ strategy and confirms the significant value creation achieved since Swiss Medical Network was founded in 2002. Wineus advised AEVIS VICTORIA and Swiss Medical Network as sell-side adviser during the entire transaction process.

Unsicherheiten bei Business Broker

Vor sieben Jahren startete die Genossenschafts-Gruppe ihre KMU-Initiative. Die „Raiffeisen Unternehmerzentrum AG“ als 100% Tochter der Raiffeisen Schweiz wollte „das Rückgrat der Schweiz“ stärken. Daraus wurde nichts, berichtete IP. Vor wenigen Wochen verkaufte die Raiffeisen Schweiz ihre Tochter Business Broker AG an die BDO Revisionsgruppe. «Die Business Broker war innerhalb der Raiffeisengruppe zuständig für KMU-Nachfolgelösungen und in dieser Rolle ein wichtiger Bestandteil der RUZ. Bei der Business Broker sind die alten Chefs unter der neuen Besitzerin rasch von Bord gesprungen. Diese hätten lieber ein Management Buyout gehabt», wird berichtet, und sprangen alsbald von Bord.

Vielseitiger Einfluss von Covid-19 auf das Crowdfunding 

Im Jahr 2020 wurden Projekte im Umfang von über 600 Millionen Franken über Crowdfunding vermittelt. Die Marktentwicklung war stark geprägt von der Covid-19 Krise. So sorgten einerseits Gutscheinverkäufe für das Gewerbe sowie Beiträge an unter der Krise speziell leidenden Privatpersonen für ein rasantes Volumen-Wachstum im Crowdsupporting-Bereich. Auf der anderen Seite hat beispielsweise der Markt für KMU-Kredite (Crowdlending) in 2020 unter der Covid-Krise stark gelitten. Das zeigt die neuste Studie zum Crowdfunding Markt Schweiz.
