Dear Reader

You know it is spring time when the newly hatched companies look for business angels. Spring is also a good time for companies that have come of age to dare an IPO. All those shares blossom in spring time and fill the air with dividends. The stockmarket will move according to the forecasts of the savants. The Super Bowl is always a good indicator for dead sure certainties. All this could be, of course, just plain guess work, otherwise known as baloney. There is only one sign that has been proven an airtight fact : the first call of the cuckoo. You have to have a coin in your pocket when you hear it to be sure you’ll have money all year round. If you don’t, you’ll be penniless for the rest of the year. When I was a little boy, my mother made sure I had a coin in my pocket when we went on a walk through the forest in spring time. When I grew up, I sometimes forgot and suffered poor times. Now I always carry a credit card in spring for the first cry of the cuckoo.

Have a nice Easter Break !
Maurice Pedergnana

Do not miss this Podcast - EP #382 - Stefan Kyora & Thomas Heimann: How Did The Swiss Startup Ecosystem Do in 2023?

During their chat with Silvan, they summarized the VC report’s findings, as well as the conclusions we can draw from them:

  • It is still difficult for Swiss companies to raise large rounds from Swiss investors. This isn’t because we don’t have plenty of VC funds, or because those funds don’t invest in Swiss companies — there are many Swiss VC funds with at least 50% of their capital allocated to Swiss startups, but these are small funds investing small amounts.
  • The total amount of funds invested in Swiss startups (both foreign and Swiss) went down in 2023 for the first time in a while. After a 10 year boom, this is to be expected, and can easily be explained if we take the unfavorable international conjuncture into account. Comparatively, Switzerland is still doing well, and is quite stable.
  • Tradesales are also down in Switzerland, both when it comes to Swiss buyers and to foreign buyers. Thomas Heimann speculates they may increase, since larger, later stage fundraising rounds are becoming more rare.
  • Fintech, cleantech and biotech are the most popular and well-funded sectors in Switzerland.
